Bennett Scores 1,000th Point In WBB's Win At Bowling Green
January 21, 2017 | Women's Basketball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Ball State women's basketball team is now off to its best start in Mid-American Conference action since the 2008-09 season after its 75-53 road win at Bowling Green Saturday afternoon in the Stroh Center. The Cardinals are now 13-6 overall and 6-1 in league play while Bowling Green drops 5-14 on the year and 1-6 in the MAC.
Senior center Renee Bennett scored her 1,000th point off of a jumper with 36 seconds left on the game clock. Bennett led all scorers with 22-points and 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season and seventh of her career. Bennett now becomes the 26th player in program history to reach the 1,00th point club. This is the first time since the 2014-15 season that the Cardinals have had two players reach 1,000 career points in the same season. Senior guard Jill Morrison scored her 1,000th point against Urbana (12/28/16). In 2014-15, Nathalie Fontaine and Shelbie Justice both accomplished that feat.
Ball State had two more players finish the day in double figures, junior forward Moriah Monaco registered 15-points while junior guard Frannie Frazier ended the day with 11.
Bowling Green started the contest off with strong defensive play, which led to the Falcons to an early 11-4 lead over the Cardinals by the 5:19 mark. After that, Monaco answered with a 3-point basket that sparked a 6-0 run making the score 11-10 with just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Falcons ended the period scoring five of the last six points to take a 16-12 advantage heading into the second stanza.
The Cardinals began to change the tempo of the ball game to their pace in the second quarter. Ball State outscored the Falcons 25-13 in the second period to take a 37-29 advantage over Bowling Green at intermission. Monaco helped the Cardinals with the scoring spree, knocking down three of her four 3-point baskets in the second period alone. Ball State also managed to force Bowling Green to turn the ball over eight times allowing the Cardinals to score 13 points off of those miscues. The deciding factor in the first half which made the largest impact for the Cardinals halftime lead was points in the paint, as Ball State scored 16 to Bowling Green's eight.
Ball State rattled off five-straight points to open the second half taking a 12-point (41-29) edge just under the eight minute mark. But Bowling Green did not go away quietly cutting the Cardinals lead to seven (47-40) with 3:26 left in the third quarter. The Cardinals then continued to rely on their inside game with Bennett and Frazier making their baskets close to the rim. Back-to-back Bowling Green turnovers allowed Frazier to dish it to Washington for a layup that would put the game out of reach for Bowling Green (58-40) with 48.7 seconds left in the third quarter.
Ball State continued to out rebound, out shoot and pretty much out play the Falcons statistically the remainder of the game. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Morrison and Monaco along with a layup from Bennett put the Cardinals up by 27 (69-42) with just over six minutes left in the contest.
The Ball State women's basketball team continues Mid-American Conference cross-division action when it travels to Buffalo Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip off in Alumni Arena. The Cardinals swept the two-game series over Buffalo last season winning in Worthen Arena by a score of 68-63 and then on the road at Alumni Arena by a score of 59-57.
