Men's Tennis Opens Season With Road Loss At Notre Dame
January 20, 2017 | Men's Tennis
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team opened its 2017 spring season on the road at Atlantic Coast Conference powerhouse Notre Dame Friday evening at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. The Cardinals battled the entire match despite what the score reflected, losing to the Fighting Irish by a score of 7-0.
"We knew playing at Notre Dame the first match of the year would be difficult," said Ball State men's tennis coach Bill Richards. "They have a very strong team and even though we lost 7-0 I thought we competed fairly well. Lucas Andersen played a great match at No. 1 singles and had chances to get a good win but just couldn't get a couple key points late in the second set. Playing at Purdue will be another tough challenge tomorrow."
Today's match began with the doubles portion of play where Notre Dame clinched the point on court two. Matt Gamble alongside his partner Alex Lebedev defeated Conner Andersen and Nemanja Guzina by a score of 6-3. Lucas Andersen and Andrew Stutz dropped the first match but took two games from the No. 10 team in the country, Josh Hagar and Eddy Covalschi. At No. 3 doubles the match went unfinished but Patrick Downs and Marko Guzina of Ball State showed promise and had knotted their match 5-5 over Notre Dame's Grayson Broadus and Brendon Kempin.
In singles action, court No. 3 was the first match to wrap up, as the Cardinals Nemanja Guzina fell in straight sets to No. 119 Alex Lebedev. Next off the court was Andrew Stutz who took two games from Eddy Covalschi in the first stanza but dropped the set 6-2 and then went on to lose the match in the second, 6-2.
The match was then clinched on court five as Downs would suffer a 6-2, 6-1 setback to Broadus. Despite the loss, senior Lucas Andersen fought to the very end and was the last competition off the court. Lucas Andersen took No. 27 Josh Hagar of Notre Dame to three sets after taking the first set from Hagar, he then fell 7-6 (7-5) in the second before losing 10-3 in the third.
The Ball State men's tennis team continues competition against another powerhouse conference school, Big Ten foe Purdue on Saturday afternoon in West Lafayette. First serve is set for noon.
