MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team improved to 5-1 in Mid-American Conference action with an impressive 78-49 win over Eastern Michigan Wednesday night in Worthen Arena. With the win, the Cardinals remain undefeated (4-0) at home in league play and improved their overall record to 12-6 while the Eagles fell to 6-12 overall and 0-5 in the MAC.
Senior center Renee Bennett paced the Cardinals in scoring with 19 points while adding seven rebounds to the win. Senior guard Jill Morrison had 17 points and teammate junior forward Moriah Monaco finished the night with 16. Morrison went 3-for-4 from the 3-point line while Monaco shot 4-of-5 from behind the arc. As a team, the Cardinals shot 61.5 percent from long range (8-of-13). Senior guard Calyn Hosea rounded out the hot shooting for Ball State with 12 points.
Ball State's defense was too much for Eastern Michigan as the Cardinals caused the Eagles to commit 20 turnovers and would score 26 points off of those miscues.
The Cardinals started tonight's contest a little differently than they have in recent games. Ball State stunned Eastern Michigan in the first quarter rattling off 21 points while holding the Eagles to four during the first seven minutes of play. Morrison and Hosea triggered the quick explosion with a jumper and a 3-point basket.
The Eagles finally scored another basket with three minutes left in the quarter. Ball State ended the quarter with a 26-9 lead over Eastern Michigan. It was the best first period showing the Cardinals have had since their season opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff when Ball State also led 26-9.
Ball State did not skip a beat in the second quarter, outscoring Eastern Michigan 20-to-9 to take a commanding 26-point (46-20) lead over the Eagles at intermission. The Cardinals controlled all aspects of the game early on, ending the half leading in all statistical categories including rebounds (23-to-17), points in the paint (22-to-6), field goal percentage (44.1-to-30.8) and from behind the arc (80.0-to-10.0).
Monaco, Morrison and Bennett put the game out of reach to start the third quarter, scoring 17 of the first 20 points by the 5:56 mark to put Ball State up by 40 (63-23).
The Ball State women's basketball team will join the men's basketball team Saturday in a Mid-American Conference cross-divisional match-up at Bowling Green. The women's basketball team will be the first of the doubleheader and will begin at noon while the men are set to tipoff at 2:30 p.m. in Stroh Arena.
