Track & Field Off to Strong Start at Kentucky Invitational

LEXINGTON, Ky. - - The Ball State indoor track & field team turned in its best distance medley relay effort since the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championships to cap the opening day of the Kentucky Invitational Friday evening at Nutter Field House.

Competing in just two events on the first day of the meet, the Cardinals went out with a bang as an all freshman DMR clocked in at 12:16.66. Hannah Cummings (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) opened the race and was followed by Peyton Kneadler (Monticello, Ind./Twin Lakes), Emily Tromp (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) and Brooke Talhelm (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central). In a solid showing as the relay's anchor, Talhelm turned in a final split of 5:05.

Junior Adrienne Mayfield (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) opened the meet for the Cardinals with a 22nd-place finish in the weight throw at 14.71m.

Action at Kentucky's Nutter Field House picks up again at 9 a.m. Saturday morning with the women's high jump. The Cardinals are scheduled to compete in nine events on the second day of competition.
