Men’s Tennis Dominates Purdue Fall Invite

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team wrapped up its fall play at the Purdue Invitational in dominating fashion on Sunday by winning three singles flights and one doubles flight.
The tournament ran from Friday thru Sunday at the Schwartz Tennis Center and the Purdue Recreation Sports Tennis Center with 15 total teams participating in the event.
Three Cardinals went undefeated in singles play — senior Lucas Andersen (4-0) and sophomores Jan Jirus (4-0) and Conner Andersen (4-0) — while sophomore Nemanja Guzina went 3-1.
The Ball State twosome of Tom Carney and Lucas Wiese were crowned Flight C champions in doubles action Saturday, after defeating IUPUI's Jac Newis and Mikel Saavedra by a score of 6-2.
Lucass Andersen collected his finale win in a two-set tiebreaker (6-1, 7-6 (2) over host Purdue's Athell Bennett in the Flight A bracket. Nemanja Guzina had a successful weekend in Flight B singles making it all the way to the championship game but earned runner-up after falling in straight sets to Souther Illinois' Piotr Baranski.
The Cardinals continued to control the invitational in the remainder of the flights with Jirus winning Flight C taking down fellow Mid-American Conference member, Toledo's Oma Espinosa, 6-4, 7-5. Conner Andersen then rounded out the Cardinals success with a three set thriller over the Rockets Reid Teatsorth, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in Flight D.
The Ball State men's tennis team continues fall play when it competes at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals in Knoxville, Tenn., Oct. 20-24.
