Lauren Roll scores; Cardinals out-shoot Buffalo 20-1
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Sophomore midfielder Lauren Roll scored in the 11th minute Friday night, and the Ball State soccer team stifled Buffalo's attack to give head coach Craig Roberts a milestone win.
The Cardinals defeated Buffalo 1-0 in their Mid-American Conference opener for Roberts' 100th career victory as a collegiate head coach.
It was Roberts' 66th victory with the Cardinals (after 34 at UT Martin) as he inched closer to Ron Rainey's school record of 70 wins.
"I'm pleased to be able to get the 100th win against a quality team like Buffalo," Roberts said. "They're always very hard-working, very well-organized. For us to perform as well as we did today is very commendable for our team. I'm proud of our players."
Ball State (6-2-1, 1-0-0 MAC) controlled possession throughout the evening as it began defense of last year's MAC regular season championship. The Cardinals held a 20-1 advantage in shots and severely limited any kind of offensive chances for the Bulls (3-4-2, 0-1-0 MAC).
Roll gave Ball State the only goal it needed. She worked a beautiful give-and-go with Allison Abbe and scored off a perfectly placed through ball from her teammate. It was Roll's third goal of the season, tying her with Lorina White for the most on the team.
The Cardinals defense locked in to maintain the one-goal advantage the rest of the way. Buffalo didn't get its first look against Ball State keeper Alyssa Heintschel until the 84th minute, and Heintschel easily corralled it.
Paula Guerrero led Ball State in the shot column with five, while Roll had four and placed two of them on frame. Heintschel played the full 90 minutes between the posts as Ball State recorded its third straight shutout and fourth of the season.
"Our girls knew what we needed to do tonight, and we did a good job of sticking to the game plan," Roberts said.
Friday's meeting was the first in the past five between Ball State and Buffalo not to go to overtime. The game has recently had major implications in the conference race with the Cardinals winning the league a year ago and Buffalo claiming the MAC East Division title in each of the past two seasons.
Ball State, which checked in at No. 49 this week in the NCAA RPI, remained unbeaten at the Briner Sports Complex this season at 5-0-1. The Cardinals will continue their home weekend Sunday with a 2 p.m. kickoff against Akron.
