Field Hockey Looks to Continue Best Start Since 1999
September 15, 2016 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State field hockey team is off to its best start to a season since 1999 with a 4-2 record and is looking to continue that trend in this weekend's matchups.
In the 1999 season, the Cardinals finished 15-6 overall and 8-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The Cards were the regular season MAC co-champions and it also marks the last time Ball State field hockey has won that title. The 1999 team captured the program's 300th victory as well.
The 1999 Cardinals had three players named First Team All-MAC, one named Second Team All-MAC and the MAC Player of the Year. The Cards finished that season ranked 16th in the final regular season national poll.
The 2016 field hockey team is starting off on the same path as the 1999 Cards and hoping to keep that going as the season progresses. The Cardinals are preparing to take on two strong teams as they travel to Iowa City this weekend.
“These next two games are definitely going to be a challenge, but nothing we haven't seen before,” junior forward Abbey Main said. “If we can play our game by staying level headed, we can give these teams something to worry about.”
Ball State takes on Penn State in a neutral site game on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 11 a.m. The Cards will then take on Iowa on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 2 p.m. Following these two games, Ball State will begin conference action at Kent State on Sept. 23.
