Junior goalkeeper owns 4.0 GPA as chemistry major
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State junior goalkeeper Alyssa Heintschel, fresh off a shutout victory over ACC foe Louisville, was selected as the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Week. It is the second time in her career she has earned the honor.
Heintschel, who one day ago was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Week for women's soccer, made a career-high 11 saves in last Friday's 1-0, double-overtime road win.
The Oregon, Ohio, native owns a perfect 4.0 GPA as a chemistry major. In addition to being the All-MAC First Team goalkeeper last season, she was also an Academic All-MAC selection, a MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete choice and an Academic All-District pick.
In the Louisville game, Heintschel helped Ball State to its first win over a Power 5 conference team in a decade. She was the last line of defense for a unit that held scoreless a Louisville team that was averaging better than three goals per game.
The contest was scoreless for both sides until late in the second overtime when Lorina White's 108th-minute goal lifted Ball State to the win.
The Cardinals (4-2-1) return to their home turf at the Briner Sports Complex to host Morehead State at 5 p.m. Friday. It is the final non-conference game for Ball State, which will also celebrate its Senior Day.
