Soccer Powers Past Fort Wayne, 2-0
August 28, 2016 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Lauren Roll and Emily Scott scored for the second time this year as the Ball State soccer team defeated Fort Wayne 2-0 Sunday afternoon.
Junior goalkeeper Tristin Stuteville made her second start and collected five saves on the way to Ball State's first shutout of the season.
The Cardinals polished off their season-opening, four-game homestand unbeaten at 3-0-1. They will hit the road for the first time next weekend.
After starting the same lineup of 10 field players for the first three games of the season, Ball State coach Craig Roberts changed things up a bit Sunday. Five players made their first start of the season against Fort Wayne (1-3-0) and immediately made their presence felt.
Ball State came out of the gates in attack mode and never dialed it back. The Cardinals registered 33 shots for the game, tying for the third-most by a BSU team in the past decade.
"We came out today with a different lineup, a different way of playing," Roberts said. "I thought the girls did what we've been trying to implement. We're not about a star player. We're about a unit and everybody being consistent with carrying out their responsibilities. I felt my team was very consistent today."
Roll entered the game for the first time when the Cardinals subbed in the 23rd minute, and she scored less than 60 seconds later when she headed home a cross from Gabby Veldman.
Scott, a fellow sophomore midfielder, added the second goal in the 30th minute. After taking a nice through ball from Lorina White, she saw Fort Wayne goalkeeper Kiley Dunning turn away her first attempt. But Scott stuck with it and put the rebound home.
It was the second time this year Roll and Scott scored in the same game. They also did it in the season-opening win over Eastern Kentucky.
Ball State continued the onslaught in the second half, though it did not add another goal. The Cardinals racked up 19 of their 33 shots after the break. But Dunning stopped all seven attempts on frame she saw on the way to 13 saves for the day.
"We would like to convert more of those chances we created," Roberts said. "I thought their goalkeeper played well. She made some very good saves. At the same time, we do need to convert those chances. On any other given day, if the goalkeeper hadn't made so many saves, we would have converted a lot more."
Sixteen different Cardinals recorded a shot in the game, led by Leah Mattingly and Kelsey Wendlandt with four each.
Ball State will now head west for a pair of games next weekend, playing Friday at Cal State Northridge and Sunday at Loyola Marymount.
