Seven. That's how many goals the Ball State soccer team scored during the season's opening weekend. Only eight of the 333 Division I teams in the country scored more.
And the goals came from everywhere. In Friday's 3-1 win over Eastern Kentucky, they came from veterans – Emily Scott, Lorina White and Lauren Roll. In Sunday's 4-1 victory over IUPUI, they came from freshmen – Sam Kambol (two), Mónica Padilla and Julia Elvbo.
It all added up to an impressive 2-0 start for the defending Mid-American Conference regular season champions. They'll look to build upon that success with two more home games this weekend.
Ball State will square off with another unbeaten team Friday when Xavier visits. The Musketeers (2-0) opened with shutout victories over Evansville and Eastern Kentucky, defeating both by 2-0 scores.
Samantha Dewey, who led Xavier with seven goals last season, accounted for one in the season's opening weekend, while Rachel Piccus was named the Big East Goalkeeper of the Week.
Ball State is 3-1-1 all-time against Xavier, including a 2-1, double-overtime victory in Muncie the last time the teams met. That was four years ago to the day.
The Cardinals are 10-1-1 against Fort Wayne, formerly called IPFW. The teams played last season in Fort Wayne with Ball State winning 3-0. Scott scored her first collegiate goal in that game.
Fort Wayne enters this weekend at 1-1 with a 2-1 loss to Western Michigan and a 2-0 win over Eastern Illinois. Chloee Foor has accounted for two of the team's three goals. The Mastodons will play Friday against Saint Louis before venturing to Muncie.
