Ball State's Season Ends With Loss to Central Michigan
May 26, 2016 | Baseball
AVON, Ohio – Central Michigan pitcher Nick Deeg held the Ball State baseball team off the scoreboard as CMU earned a 4-0 win over the Cardinals in an elimination game at the 2016 Mid-American Conference Tournament Thursday morning.
Ball State concludes the season with a 32-26 record. Central Michigan (22-36) advances to play the loser of Miami and Western Michigan tomorrow afternoon.
Deeg recorded his second complete game of the season. The lefty struck out eight batters, only walked one and limited Ball State to four singles.
Ball State's best chance to score came in the fifth inning when the Cardinals loaded the bases with two outs. Central Michigan shortstop Zach McKinstry likely saved a run when he stopped a Roman Baisa grounder deep in the hole on the left side. Baisa reached first on the play and senior Scott Tyler advanced to second, but senior Ryan Spaulding was held at third base. Junior Alex Call followed with a pop up to end the threat.
The Chippewas got on the board in the second inning with a bases loaded walk. Ball State starting pitcher Matt Haro avoided further damage with a ground ball double play. Haro went a season-high 6.1 innings, struck out four and was charged with three runs.
Central Michigan scored three insurance runs in the seventh inning. Daniel Jipping tallied a key two-out, two-run double in the frame.
This was only the second time all season Ball State did not score a run. George Washington defeated the Cardinals, 2-0, on Feb. 28.
