April 06, 2016 | Men's Tennis
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team improved its record to 8-10 overall with a 5-2 mid-week non-conference win over IUPUI Wednesday afternoon at the Indy Racquet Club. With the loss, the Jaguars fall to 7-18 on the season.
"This was a good hard fought road win," Ball State head men's tennis coach Bill Richards said. "Once again we dug ourselves a hole losing the doubles point. But we showed toughness and poise winning 5 first sets in singles to take control of the match. We worked through some tight situations and came through in several pressure moments."
The Cardinals No. 1 twosome of Conner Andersen and Andrew Stutz started Ball State off with a 6-2 win over IUPUI's Bradley Luetschwager and Louis Sacks. But the Jaguars fought back to take victories on courts two and three by a score of 6-4 to win the doubles point and take and early 1-0 lead over the Caridnals' heading into singles play.
In singles action, Ball State earned wins on courts one, three, two, six and five in that order. Lucas Andersen, Nemanja Guzina and Andrew Stutz all took their respective opponents down in straight sets. Andersen was the first Ball State player off the court as he beat the Jaguars' Jac Newis 6-4 in the first set and then did not give up a game in the second set, winning 6-0. Nemanja Guzine beat David Beasley, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and Stutz earned a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Marcus Nalley to pul Ball State up 3-1 over IUPUI.
After that, Marko Guzina would clinch the match for the Cardinals with his three set thriller over Jose Calero at the No. 6 position. Patrick Downs also won his match in three sets on court five.
The Ball State men's tennis team continues non-conference action Saturday when it hosts Taylor University at 2 p.m. in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
