Lewis Leads Track & Field on Final Day of Jesse Owens Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio - - Freshman Regan Lewis recorded a Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying mark in the high jump to lead the Ball State track & field team to a solid all-around showing Saturday on the final day of the Jesse Owens Track & Field Classic held at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Paced by Lewis' career-best effort of 1.68m (5'-6") in the high jump, the Cardinals turned in five top 10 finishes, four individual career best performances and a pair of season-bests in the relays to cap the non-scored, two-day event.
Ball State's 4x100m relay of Anna-Kay West, Peyton Stewart, Amber McGee and Jazmin Smith opened the day strong, combining for a season-best time of 47.30.
Three events later, following the start of Lewis' run in the high jump, freshman McGee (58.17) and sophomore Gabby Sims (58.45) collected career-best times in the 400m dash.
The hammer throw was the next event scheduled to start, with senior Marie Lumpkin turning in a seventh-place toss of 52.93m (173'-8”).
In the final individual event, senior Becca Kropf placed ninth in the 400m hurdles at 1:02.16. Junior Olivia Ashba was not far behind, crossing the finish line in 13th with a career-best time of 1:02.60, while classmate Kassidy Swenson placed 14th in 1:02.85.
The Cardinals closed the meet with its best finish of the day, as the 4x400m relay of McGee, Ashba, Kropf and Sims combined to place fourth with a season-best clocking of 3:49.92.
The Ball State track & field team returns to action next Saturday, with some members of the squad traveling to the Georgia Invitational in Athens, Ga., and others heading to the Redhawks Invitational in Oxford, Ohio.
