Bowling Green Takes Game One at Ball State, 5-1

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team couldn't come up with the big hit Friday as visiting Bowling Green earned a 5-1 win at Ball Diamond.

The Cardinals (23-16, 9-4 MAC) came into the contest averaging more than 10 runs per game at home. Ball State hitters were just 1-of-14 (.071) with runners on base in the opener versus Bowling Green (15-23, 5-8).

Ball State scored its only run in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Alex Call led off with a double to the right field wall and fellow junior Alex Maloney followed with a single. However, the Cardinals had to settle for one run as a ground ball double play and strikeout quickly ended the inning.

Bowling Green responded with a run in the second and another in the fifth to take the lead. Greg Basalyga added an RBI double to center field in the eighth inning while Riley Minorik tallied a two-run home run in the ninth to complete the scoring.

The Cardinals only managed two hits in the final eight innings. Ball State left eight runners on base, including two in the second, fifth, eighth and ninth innings.

Devin Daugherty (3-1) notched the win on the mound for Bowling Green as the righty came on in the fifth and worked out of a jam.

The two teams continue the three-game series tomorrow, April 23 at 1 p.m. Prior to the start of Saturday's game, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the recent upgrades to Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
