
Downs Lifts Men's Tennis To 4-3 Win At NIU

DEKALB, Ill. - Patrick Downs' 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Kevin Daun lifted the men's tennis team to a 4-3 win at Northern Illinois Saturday afternoon. With the win, Ball State improves to 7-9 overall and 2-2 in the Mid-American Conference play while Northern Illinois drops to 14-7 and 2-2 in league action.
The Cardinals opened the match on a high note by taking the doubles point from the Huskies. Lucas Andersen alongside his No. 2 doubles partner Patrick Downs, gave Ball State the 1-0 edge. The twosome took down the Huskies' Daun and Georg Lundkvist by a score of 6-4. Northern Illinois then evened doubles action after their defeat on court three over the Cardinals' duo of Matt Helm and Tom Carney. After that, Andrew Stutz and Conner Andersen earned a 7-6 (4) thrilling win on the top court to clinch the point for Ball State.
Northern Illinois quickly jumped out to a 2-1 advantage over Ball State after posting wins on courts three and six. The Cardinals then stormed back with wins on courts one, two and five. Lucas Andersen and Stutz both took their respective opponents down in straight sets on the top two courts. After that, Downs defeated Daun in a three set thriller which would be the deciding match for the Cardinals victory. Conner Andersen came close to winning the last competition on the court today but lost, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6 at No. 4 singles.
The Ball State men's tennis team will play at Big Ten foe Illinois Sunday at 6 p.m. (EST).
