Soccer Competes in 2-0 Loss at Notre Dame
April 16, 2016 | Soccer
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Ball State coach Craig Roberts was pleased with his team's competitiveness in a 2-0 loss Friday night at Notre Dame, a top-10 team from last season.
The Cardinals surrendered a pair of goals on set pieces on the way to their first loss of the spring schedule. Still, Roberts' team drew plenty of positives from the experience.
“In the grand scheme of things, we did very well to compete with them,” Roberts said. “They have a much larger roster returning than we do, but I thought we put forth a commendable effort and were very organized.”
Roberts pointed to strong performances by goalkeepers Alyssa Heintschel and Tristin Stuteville. He also highlighted the offensive efforts of Aly Kohanowski and Gabby Veldman, a South Bend native who played in front of a home crowd.
“We saw a lot of improvement throughout the entire team,” Roberts said. “Our goalkeepers were outstanding. Our defenders did a great job of picking off crosses. We created several opportunities to score but didn't convert.
“Overall, I am delighted with the performance and with how much progress we have made through the spring. If we reproduce this kind of performance with a deeper squad in the fall, I think we will be on the right track to contend again at the top of the league.”
Ball State will continue its spring schedule Sunday at 1p.m. with its alumni game at the Briner Sports Complex.
