Men's Golf Leads by Seven at Yestingsmeier Memorial

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Keegan McKinney's day for the Ball State men's golf team didn't get off to the best start. A bogey on his first hole and a triple bogey on his second left him playing catch-up.
But the redshirt sophomore from Avon, Indiana, played the final 34 holes Friday in 4 under par. By the end of the day, after closing with back-to-back birdies, he was alone atop the leaderboard with a score of even-par 140 (72-68) at Ball State's Earl Yestingsmeier Memorial Invitational.
He guided the Cardinals to a seven-shot lead as a team through two rounds at Delaware Country Club. Ball State posted a score of 719 (+19) Friday. Team lineups this week feature six players, with the top five scores counting in each round.
Cleveland State (+26) sits in second place in the 12-team field. Dayton (+32), Valparaiso (+35) and IUPUI (+37) round out the top five.
Johnny Watts (T-6) and Michael VanDeventer (T-8) join McKinney in the top 10 for Ball State. Watts (+4) was second after an opening-round 69 but dropped a few spots with a second-round 75. VanDeventer (+5) is one shot behind him.
James Blackwell (+6), who led the field with 11 birdies on the day, is tied for 14th. Michael Makris (+8) is tied for 24th, and Timothy Wiseman (+11) is tied for 38th to round out Ball State's top lineup. Wiseman bounced back nicely from an opening 80 to card the team's second-best score of the second round with a 71.
The Cardinals are also fielding a "B" team in the event. Colin Proctor (+10) leads that group in a tie for 34th.
The third and final round will be played Saturday. Ball State's "A" team will begin on the first hole with tee times starting at 9 a.m. The "B" team will go off the 10th tee starting at 8:30 a.m.
