COLUMBUS, Ind. -- The Ball State men's golf team closed with a round of 297 on Sunday to drop into a tie for sixth at the Hoosier Collegiate at Otter Creek.
Johnny Watts tied for 10th place to lead the Cardinals, who tied with tournament host Indiana for sixth place with a 36-hole total of 590 (+14). Purdue and Miami shared the team championship at 578 (+2). Xavier (+4) finished two shots back in third place at Otter Creek Golf Course.
Michael VanDeventer and Keegan McKinney led Ball State with 73's in the final round, while the Cardinals also counted a 74 from Watts and a 77 from James Blackwell.
Watts' 36-hole total of 145 (+1) was five shots back of individual medalist Patrick Flavin of Miami. His tie for 10th marked his fourth top-10 result of the season.
Blackwell and VanDeventer tied for 23rd at 148 (+4), giving Ball State three of the top 25 on the individual leaderboard.
The Hoosier Collegiate was initially scheduled for 54 holes but was shortened to 36 when cold temperatures limited play on the opening day to one round.
The Cardinals will return to action later this week when they host their home tournament, the Earl Yestingsmeier Memorial Invitational. The action begins Friday at Delaware Country Club.
