Huge Third Inning Propels Ball State to 10-0 Win
March 19, 2016 | Baseball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team cruised to a 10-0 win over Dayton Saturday afternoon at Ball Diamond. All 10 runs were scored in the third inning.
The Cardinals (11-9) quickly pulled away thanks to home runs from juniors Caleb Stayton, Alex Maloney and Alex Call. Ball State scored its first run of the third on a wild pitch, allowing Call to score. Stayton proceeded to hit his third home run of the season to right field to make the score, 3-0.
Two batters later, Maloney ripped a two-run shot down the left field line for his first long ball of the year to extend the lead to 5-0. Call capped the inning with the third home run of the inning, a three-run blast to left field, to score juniors Sean Kennedy and Matt Eppers.
The 10 runs were the most scored by the Cardinals in an inning since Ball State tallied 10 runs in the third inning against Toledo on May 14, 2009.
Sophomore Brendan Burns (3-1) picked up the win as the righty scattered eights singles over six innings. Three relievers – junior David Current, sophomore Trevor Simon and redshirt freshman Evan Marquardt – did not allow a Dayton (3-14) hit over the final three frames.
Ball State will look to complete the rare four-game sweep tomorrow, March 20 when the two teams square off at 1 p.m.
