Watts Takes Second, Men?s Golf Fifth at Pinehurst

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, N.C. -- Johnny Watts finished second and the Ball State men's golf team moved up to fifth Sunday in the final round of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate.
The Cardinals posted the second-lowest round of the day with a 291 to finish with a 54-hole total of 888 (+36) on the No. 8 course at Pinehurst.
Watts led the way with an even-par round of 71, while Ball State also counted a 72 from Keegan McKinney, a 73 from James Blackwell and a 75 (both Michael VanDeventer and Tyler Pearson).
Xavier held on to win the team championship by one stroke with a total of 878 (+26). Elon (+27), Marshall (+28) and Austin Peay (+32) rounded out the top four in the 11-team field.
Watts finished the tournament at 214 (+1), just one stroke behind individual medalist Will Branham of Morehead State. It was the third top-10 result of the season for Watts, last year's Mid-American Conference champion.
McKinney climbed 10 spots Sunday to finish in a tie for 14th at 222 (+9) with teammate Timothy Wiseman, who competed as an individual.
VanDeventer and Michael Makris, competing as an individual, tied for 26th at 225 (+12).
Ball State will return to action April 2-3 at the Mason Rudolph Invitational at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tennessee.
