BATON ROUGE, La. – No. 6 LSU used an eight-run fourth inning to pull away from the Ball State baseball team in a 9-3 win Saturday night at Alex Box Stadium. The two teams will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon.
Ball State (8-8) struck first in the top of the third inning. Senior Ryan Spaulding hit a one-out triple down the right field line to score sophomore Colin Brockhouse and junior Alex Maloney.
LSU (11-3) scored its first run in the bottom of the third. One inning later, the Tigers tallied seven runs before the Cardinals could record an out. LSU managed to plate eight runs on seven hits in the fourth inning.
The Cardinals added a run in the fifth thanks to junior Caleb Stayton's RBI single, but left the bases loaded in that inning. LSU held Ball State to two hits in the final four innings.
Kramer Robertson, Jake Fraley and Greg Deichmann each recorded a pair of RBIs for the Tigers. Starting pitcher Alex Lange (2-0) earned the win as the righty held Ball State to three runs in six innings.
For the Cardinals, Maloney and Stayton each reached base three times with a single and two walks. Sophomore Brendan Burns (2-1) suffered his first loss, as he could not make it out of the fourth inning.
Sunday's finale is slated to begin at 1 p.m. ET (12 p.m. CT).
