Watts Holds First-Round Lead at Pinehurst

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, N.C. -- Ball State men's golfer Johnny Watts opened with a 2-under par 69 to grab the first-round lead Friday at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate.
The Cardinals are sixth as a team after a score of 298 (+14). Xavier (288) leads the way, followed by Elon (292) and Austin Peay (293). Marshall and Belmont share fourth place, one shot ahead of Ball State.
Watts carded four birdies and a double bogey Friday on the No. 8 course at Pinehurst. He holds a one-stroke lead over Xavier's Daniel Wetterich on the individual leaderboard. Four players are two shots back at even par.
In addition to the 69 from Watts, Ball State also counted a 75 from Keegan McKinney and a pair of 77s from James Blackwell and Michael VanDeventer in Friday's round. McKinney is the second Cardinal on the leaderboard in a tie for 22nd.
The second round will be played Saturday with tee times starting at 8:15 a.m., and the third and final round will be played Sunday. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
