Game Notes
Opening Pitch: This is the third straight year the Cardinals have made an early season trip to the Sunshine State. Ball State went 5-3 overall the last two years in Florida.
Series History: Ball State and Kent State are MAC rivals, but are not scheduled to play a league series this year. Ball State has won six of the last nine games against Kent State. Kent State, the preseason MAC favorite, leads the all-time series, 63-52.
Ball State and Milwaukee met in Florida two years ago in the only previous meeting. The Cardinals won that game, 3-1. 1B Caleb Stayton went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs versus Milwaukee.
Ball State and George Washington have never met on the baseball field.
Marnon Shines in Debut: LHP Kevin Marnon, a transfer from Akron, made his Ball State debut last week and did not disappoint. The junior did not allow a hit until the fifth inning and struck out three batters. Marnon tossed 6.2 innings and gave up one run in the 3-1 win over Utah Valley.
Stayton Picks Up Where He Left Off: 1B Caleb Stayton ended the 2015 season hitting safely in his final five games. Last weekend, Stayton tallied a hit in three of the four games and led the Cardinals with a .313 batting average and three RBIs.
Good Start to the Season: Three Cardinals have reached base safely in all four games this year - C Jarett Rindfleisch, OF Alex Call and 2B Ryan Spaulding. Spaulding notched five walks and two doubles in the opening weekend.
Sharing the Load: Head coach Rich Maloney utilized 13 pitchers in the opening weekend, including five who made their debut in a Ball State uniform. Eight of the 13 pitchers allowed one run or less in their appearance.
