
Fontaine Scores 2000th Point In Loss At Kent State

KENT, Ohio - Senior forward Nathalie Fontaine became only the second Cardinal in program history to reach the 2000th career point mark after her 28-point performance in a 59-50 loss at Kent State Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Ball State women's basketball team dropped to 16-7 overall and fell to 8-4 in Mid-American Conference action while Kent State improves to 5-17 for year and 2-10 in league play.
For the second-straight game, the Cardinals fell behind early to the Golden Flashes after Kent State opened the game with an 8-0 run. Kent State had gone up by 13 (15-2) by the 5:15 mark after a jumper from Jordan Korinek. Ball State closed the first quarter with a 5-0 run to end stanza down 15-7.
Fontaine started the second quarter off with a quick jumper sparking an 8-3 run which was capped off by a three-point basket from sophomore guard Moriah Monaco. The run brought Ball State to within three (18-15) with 6:13 remaining in the half. The Cardinals only found themselves down by one (21-20) to the Golden Flashes at the break.
After that, both teams traded baskets which resulted in five ties and four lead changes. Kent State took a 40-38 lead off of a three-point basket from Larissa Lurken with 9:16 left in the contest. Ball State wouldn't lead again the remainder of the game.
For the game, Fontaine led all scorers with a 28-point performance which brings her career point total to 2,000. She becomes the second player in program history (Tamara Bowie is first with 2,091 points) to reach that mark and the 15th in MAC women's basketball history. Fontaine also collected her 30th career double-double with a game high 10 rebounds.
The Ball State women's basketball team continues its two-game road trip when it faces fellow MAC West Division opponent Northern Illinois Wednesday at 8 p.m. (EST) in the Convocation Center.
