Big Second Half Fuels WBB's In-State Rivalry Win At Butler

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team earned its second-straight win at in-state rival Butler Sunday afternoon in Hinkle Fieldhouse after defeating the Bulldogs, 74-50.
The Cardinals have not defeated Butler in Hinkle Fieldhouse since the 2006-07 season. Ball State improves to 5-2 overall while the Bulldogs fell to 2-6.
Sophomore guard Destiny Washington led the Cardinals offensively with a 17-point performance, just one shy of her career best. Sophomore guard Carmen Grande and senior center Renee Bennett chipped in 16-points apiece while junior forward Moriah Monaco ended the day with 10. Monaco has now scored in double figures in all seven of Ball State's games this season. The Cardinals bench scored 21 points in today's win.
For the game, Ball State shot 44.8 percent from the field while holding Butler to 35.4 shooting. The Cardinals managed to score 28 points off of the Bulldogs 28 miscues while also scoring 30 points in the paint.
After 13 lead changes and three ties in the first half, Ball State finally started to pull away from Butler at the 3:22 mark in the second quarter. The contest was knotted 24-24 before the Cardinals put together an 8-0 run to go up 32-24 with 1:18 remaining in the first half. But the Bulldogs Alexa Bailey managed to knock down a 3-point basket as time expired to cut the Cardinals lead to five (32-27) heading into intermission.
Bennett then opened the second half with a layup off of the assist from senior guard Jill Morrison who made her return after missing three games due to an injury. In her return, Morrison knocked down three from behind the arc to finish the game with nine points. The basket by Bennett sparked a 9-2 run that gave Ball State an 11-point (41-30) advantage over Butler with 6:52 left in the third quarter. The Bulldogs managed to come within eight points twice the remainder of the quarter with the last time being at the 1:43 mark (50-42).
After that, the Cardinals dominated the fourth quarter scoring 22 points while holding the Bulldogs to only eight points the remainder of the contest. Defensively, Ball State did not allow Butler to score a point until the 4:13 mark, by then the Cardinals had built a 22-point cushion after back-to-back 3-point plays from Grande and Washington.
