MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State soccer players Leah Mattingly and Alyssa Heintschel continue to be recognized for their athletic and academic achievements.
On Thursday, the pair was named to the Scholar All-North/Central Region Second Team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Both players helped Ball State win a second straight Mid-American Conference regular season championship and were cornerstones for a defensive unit that ranked among the top 25 nationally in goals against average (0.72) for a second straight year.
Both were Academic All-District selections earlier this fall by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), with Heintschel being recognized by that group as an Academic All-American.
Mattingly owns a 3.90 GPA as an interior design major. She is a three-time Academic All-MAC choice and a two-time MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete.Â
On the field, the senior defender from Floyds Knobs, Indiana, saw more action than any player in program history. Her 82 games played, 82 starts and 7,768 minutes are all Ball State records for a career. The three-time All-MAC selection added three goals and two assists this year to finish her career among the top 10 in school annals with 11 goals and 10 assists.
Heintschel, who owns a 4.0 GPA as a chemistry major, is a two-time Academic All-MAC choice. She became the program's first Academic All-American since 2012 when she earned third-team honors last month.
The junior goalkeeper from Oregon, Ohio, led the MAC in goals against average (0.58) and shutouts (6) during conference play. She was named the All-MAC First Team goalkeeper for the second year in a row. Heintschel ranks first in the Ball State record books for career GAA (0.79), second for shutouts (18) and fourth for wins (29).
Ball State went 14-3-3 (9-1-1 MAC) this season on the way to winning the MAC regular season title for the season year in a row.
