December 11, 2016 | Women's Basketball
ROCHESTER, Mich. – In a game that saw seven ties and 10 lead changes, the Cardinals managed to pull out a 66-59 road victory at Oakland Sunday evening behind senior center Renee Bennett's career-high 28-points.
With the win, Ball State improved its overall record to 6-3 while Oakland drops to 5-4 for the year.
The Cardinals struggled from the floor earlier in the week but bounced back in today's game shooting 47.2 percent while holding Oakland to one of its lowest shooting performances of the season 32.8 percent. Defensively, Ball State continues to win the board battle, outrebounding Oakland, 40 to 35.
Bennett led all players with her career best 28 points after going 12-of-15 from the field. Junior forward Moriah Monaco collected her first double-double of her career after scoring 13 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
Today's game was a game of runs, where each team traded baskets for the majority of the contest. Oakland never led in the second half, Ball State always took back control despite multiple ties in the third and fourth quarters. Oakland knotted the game for the seventh and final time (54-54) with 5:20 left to play in the contest.
Senior guard Calyn Hosea then hit a timely jumper that sparked a 7-0 run for the Cardinals. Back-to-back baskets from Bennett during that scoring spree allowed Ball State to take a seven-point lead (61-54) over Oakland with just under four minutes remaining.
After that, the Cardinals defense held Oakland to only a basket the remainder of the contest. The Golden Grizzlies were forced to foul the Cardinals and Ball State would hit 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
At the start of the first quarter, Bennett scored the first nine points for the Cardinals to give Ball State the early 9-5 lead over Oakland. The Golden Grizzlies would then answer quickly with a 7-3 run for the first tie of the game (12-12) at the 3:06 mark. Both teams continued to stay neck and neck with each other the remainder of the half.
Ball State finally began to pull away at the end of the second quarter after building its largest lead of the half (30-24) with 56 seconds remaining off of baskets from Bennett and sophomore guard Carmen Grande. But Oakland rattled off six-straight points in less than a minute to tie the game 30-30 at intermission.
Bennett scored 15 of her 28 points by halftime. She has now scored in double figures in all of the Cardinals nine games this season.
The Ball State women's basketball team returns to non-conference action on Sunday, Dec. 18 when it hosts Lipscomb in Worthen Arena at 2 p.m.
