Hot Shooting Leads To WBB's Win Over Chicago State

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team's hot shooting led the Cardinals to an impressive 88-53 victory over Chicago State Thursday night in Worthen Arena.
With the win, Ball State improves to 4-2 overall while Chicago State falls to 0-7 on the season.
The Cardinals had their best shooting performance of the season after shooting 59.4 percent from the field and 70 points in the paint for the game, while holding the Cougars to 32.2 percent. Ball State also forced Chicago State to commit 21 turnovers and capitalized by scoring 26 points off of those miscues. The Cardinals also out-rebounded the Cougars 43 to 26.
Sophomore guard Destiny Washington and senior center Renee Bennett led the team with 18 points apiece. The 18-point performance by Washington was a season best, she also pulled down a personal-high 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Junior forward Moriah Monaco chipped in 16 points, while senior guard Calyn Hosea ended the night with 11 and freshman guard Aliyah Walker had a personal best 10-point performance. That was the second time this season the Cardinals had five players score in double figures. Sophomore guard Carmen Grande dished out 13 assists which tied her career best.
With 2:56 left in the contest the Cardinals had built one of their largest leads of the game, 84-47, after a layup from junior guard Brionna Simond. Ball State dominated the entire second half scoring 21 points in the third quarter and 24 in the final stanza. The Cardinals also got 21 points off their bench in tonight's victory.
Bennett and Washington opened the contest with back-to-back layups to take an early 4-0 edge over Chicago State. The Cougars quickly answered with a 5-0 run to take its first and last lead of the ball game (5-4) at the 7:20 mark. Monaco then nailed one from behind the arc, which sparked a 20-7 scoring spree to give the Cardinals a 24-12 advantage at the end of the first stanza.
In the second quarter, the Cardinals continued their hot shooting hand, eventually building a 20-point (43-23) lead over Chicago State at intermission. Ball State scored 34 points in the paint in the first half alone which included 16 fast-break layups.
The Ball State women's basketball team continues its non-conference season when it faces its second of three Indiana opponents Sunday when it travels to Butler for a 1 p.m. tipoff at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Cardinals won their game against the Bulldogs last season, 58-50.
