Volleyball’s Rally Falls Short in Five-Set Loss at Toledo
November 03, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
TOLEDO, Ohio - - For the third consecutive match it looked like the Ball State women's volleyball team was going to rally back from an early deficit. Unfortunately, the Cardinals fell a few points short in a 3-2 (25-22, 12-25, 25-18, 21-25, 15-10) Mid-American Conference loss to Toledo in a Thursday night thriller at Savage Arena.
While the Cardinals (11-16; 7-6 MAC) scored the first point of the night thanks to one of sophomore right side Brooklyn Goodsel (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) team-high 14 kills, the guests found themselves trailing 7-1 early in the opening set. Ball State would not be deterred, however, battling back take a 17-15 lead thanks in a rally which ended with an ace from freshman setter Amber Seaman (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf) and three consecutive Rockets (15-10; 8-5 MAC) errors.
Unfortunately, the hosts would battle back to even the score at 18 with three of the next four points. Ball State kept the score of the opening set tied at 22, before a three-point Toledo run helped the Rockets escape with a crucial opening frame victory.
The Cardinals responded to the loss with a dominating 25-12 second set victory, connecting for a .500 (14-1-26) clip on offense and holding the Rockets to a -.037 (6-7-27) rate of success. Goodsel led Ball State with four kills in the frame, while freshman middle Sydnee VanBeek (St. John, Ind./Illiana Christian) and sophomore outside Ellie Dunn (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) each connected for three.
From there, the teams spilt the next two frames with Toledo pulling away late in a 25-18 third set win and the Cardinals closing strong in a 25-21 fourth set victory. Unfortunately, the back-and-fourth continued in the fifth set as the Rockets pulled ahead 10-4 and never looked back to take the match in five.
In addition to her team-high 14 kills, Goodsel finished the night with 12 digs for her eight double-double of the season. She also tied for team-high honors with four total blocks and added her 25th career service ace.
VanBeek was Ball State's second-best attacking option, scoring eight kills and leading all players with a .538 (8-1-13) attack percentage. Dunn finished the match with 12 kills, while redshirt junior outside Sabrina Mangapora (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) added nine.
In a night which saw Seaman set the Ball State offense in the first three sets and junior setter McCallen Kennedy (Boca Raton, Fla./North Broward Preparatory School) close out the match, the Cardinals hit .177 (48-20-158) to edge-out the Rockets who attacked at a .143 (59-34-175) clip.
Freshman libero Kate Avila (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) led the Ball State defense with 17 digs, while classmate Hannah Smith (Selma, Ind./Wapahani) added 15. Sophomore defensive specialist Lauren Schreiner (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) added 12 digs to round out Ball State's top defensive contributors.
The Ball State women's volleyball team returns to action Sunday, when it hosts Akron in a 1 p.m. first serve at Worthen Arena to open a three-match homestand to close the 2016 regular season.
