Volleyball Suffers Tuesday Setback at Cincinnati

CINCINNATI - - The Ball State women's volleyball team fought until the end Tuesday night, dropping the third set 32-20, in a 3-0 (25-8, 25-19, 32-30) set back at Cincinnati's Fifth Third Arena.
While the Cardinals (8-1) entered the night as one of the nation's top defenses, ranking first in digs per set (18.24) and 69th in opponents hitting percentage (.175), the Bearcats (6-3) were able to break the trend and hit .435 (53-6-108).
After a slow start on offense, with just five total kills in the opening set, Ball State found its grove over the final two sets and finished the contest with three players reaching double-digit kills.
Leading the way was junior outside hitter Audrey Geer with 12 kills, while junior opposite Tiffany Snook reached double digits for the fourth straight match at 11. Junior outside hitter Ava Smith rounded out the trio with 10.
Three-time reigning MAC Defensive Player of the Week, junior Sophie Ledbetter, paced the BSU defense with 12 total digs, including six in the final set.
Sydney Nolan led the Cincinnati attack with a match-high 14 kills, while Nina Scrucca added 13 and a match-best .591 (13-0-22) hitting mark .Viktoria Ninova led all players with 18 digs.
After playing its first nine regular season matches on the road, the Ball State women's volleyball team returns to Worthen Arena Thursday for a 6 p.m. first serve versus Northwestern.
