WBB Loses Tough Overtime Game To East Carolina
November 24, 2016 | Women's Basketball
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Despite holding a three-point lead with 11 seconds to play in the game, the Ball State women's basketball team suffered an 82-69 overtime loss to East Carolina in the Cardinals final game of the Savannah Invitational Thursday night in the Civic Center.
With the loss, Ball State falls to 3-2 overall, while the Pirates improved to 5-2 for the year.Â
In a game where the lead changed 15 times and the score was tied seven times, four of the Cardinals scored in double figures but it wasn't enough to lead Ball State to victory. Junior forward Moriah Monaco led the way with 16-points and was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 16.7 points and 5.0 rebounds in three games. Senior center Renee Bennett ended the contest with 14 points, while teammates senior guard Calyn Hosea and freshman guard Destiny Washington each had 11 points apiece.Â
Ball State opened the game with an 8-2 run after two 3-point baskets from Monaco and a layup from Bennett. The Cardinals remained in control the remainder of quarter and would lead 16-8 after the first period. East Carolina answered quickly and outscored Ball State 22-12 in the second quarter to take a 30-28 lead over the Cardinals at the half.
East Carolina carried its momentum into the third quarter with an 11-2 run in the opening minutes to give the Pirates a nine-point (41-32) advantage over the Cardinals at the 6:28 mark. After that, Bennett snapped the scoring spree with a jumper which sparked a 15-4 run to give Ball State back the lead (47-45) with 48 seconds remaining in the third period.
Both teams scored 16 points each in the fourth quarter, with Ball State leading by three (63-60) with 11 seconds left to play in the game but the Pirates would have the last possession and Antoinette Bannister hit an off balanced 3-point basket, despite Ball State contesting the shot which put the game into overtime.
Eastern Carolina started overtime with a 9-0 run and never looked back leading by as many as 15 (82-67) with 21 seconds left to play. The Panthers scored 12 points in the paint in OT and nine off of the Cardinals miscues.
The Ball State women's basketball team returns to Worthen Arena Thursday, Dec. 1 against Chicago State at 7 p.m.
