SAVANNAH, Ga. - In a game where the Ball State women's basketball team raced out to a 39-21 halftime lead, the Cardinals put four players in double figures to earn a 76-57 victory over North Carolina A&T Wednesday afternoon in Ball State's second game of the Savannah Invitational.
With the win, Ball State improved to 3-1 on the season while NC A&T fell to 1-4.
The Cardinals hot shooting hand returned after last night's game against Auburn. Ball State shot 53.6 percent from the floor while holding the Aggies to 33.3 percent. The Cardinals also out-rebounded NC A&T, 43-to-34. Defensively, the Cardinals held the Aggies leading scorer to 2-of-13 from the floor and only eight points for the game.
For the sixth-straight game, Moriah Monaco hit double figures leading all players with a game high 23 points. Senior center Renee Bennett tallied 16 points while teammates freshman guard Destiny Washington chipped in 11 points and junior guard Frannie Frazier ended the contest with 10. Sophomore Carmen Grande dished out a career high 13 assists and added six points to the victory.
Back-to-back baskets from Bennett and Grande in the Cardinals first few drives of the game gave the Cardinals the early 4-0 edge over NC A&T. But the Aggies tied the score and even took the lead 9-8 at the 4:31 mark. After that, Ball State regained control and never looked back eventually ending the first half with a 23-10 scoring spree and an 18-point lead.
Monaco opened the second half with a quick 3-point basket and then a layup to put Ball State up by 23 (46-23). NC A&T would come within 14 (50-36) at the 4:41 mark in the third quarter but that was as close as the Aggies would get the remainder of the way. The Cardinals continued to dominate in the fourth quarter eventually building their largest margin of the contest 26-points (72-46) with 3:53 left in the contest.
