Junior goalkeeper becomes third Academic All-American in program history
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Add Academic All-American to the list of accolades for junior goalkeeper Alyssa Heintschel of the Ball State soccer team.
The Oregon, Ohio, product is one of only 33 players in the country to earn the recognition for 2016. She was named Tuesday to the Academic All-America Third Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Heintschel, who owns a 4.0 GPA as a chemistry major, has been highly decorated for her performance on and off the field. She is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, two-time Academic All-Mid-American Conference choice and three-time MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week.
Heintschel was voted as the All-MAC First Team goalkeeper this season for the second year in a row after helping Ball State win its second straight MAC regular season championship. She ranked among the top 50 nationally in goals against average both years.
She started all 11 league games in 2016, posting a 9-1-1 record. Her 0.58 goals against average and six shutouts during conference play were the best in the MAC.
Heintschel owns an overall record of 29-8-6 in three years with the Cardinals. She ranks first in school history with a 0.79 career goals against average, and she is already second in the Ball State record book for solo shutouts (18) and wins (29).
Heintschel becomes the third Ball State soccer player ever to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, joining Skylar Chew (2012, first team) and Amy Holst (2006, second team).
