Divers Excel in Meet at Illinois State

NORMAL, Ill. – The Ball State women's swimming and diving team traveled to Illinois State Friday night and fell to the Redbirds, 172-128.
Junior Amanda Kedzierski led the Cardinals with top finishes in multiple events. Kedzierski finished first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.90, breaking a pool record, and finished third in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:25.86. She was also part of the second place finish in the 400 medley relay along with Anne Vormohr, Sophie Bader and Jessica Extine with a time of 3:54.27. Kedzierski, Vormohr, Extine and Peighton Gilbert finished second in the 400 freestyle relay at 3:35.09.
Along with being part of the 400 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay, senior Jessica Extine finished first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.60. She also placed third in the 100 freestyle at 53.85.
The Cardinals dominated on the 1-meter dive and the 3-meter dive, taking first, second and third place in both events. Freshman Rachel Smallwood placed first in the 1-meter with a score of 257.10 and second in the 3-meter with a score of 244.72. Freshman Rachel Bertram took second place with a score of 243.00 in the 1-meter and finished first in the 3-meter with a final score of 250.95. Sophomore Courtney McKeen had a score of 238.57 in the 1-meter dive and a score of 240.97 in the 3-meter dive, placing her in third in both events.
Other top finishers on the day were Cassidy Blackwin placing second in the 1000 freestyle (10:44.63) and second in the 500 freestyle (5:13.28); Anne Vormohr finishing second in the 100 backstroke (58.27) and third in the 200 backstroke (2:08.70); Katie Horn finishing second in the 200 butterfly (2:07.56) and second in the 100 butterfly (57.93); Sophie Bader placing third in the 200 butterfly (2:08.28) and third in the 100 butterfly (58.68); Peighton Gilbert finishing second in the 50 freestyle (24.85); Liz Madison placing first in the 500 freestyle (5:13.08) and Courtney Mudd finishing third in the 200 IM (2:11.98).
"We had some exciting finishes and close races today," said head coach Kristy Patterson. "Illinois State has a strong team and we needed to be our best to win the meet. They were the better team today."
"Our dive squad came through big with 1-2-3 finishes on both boards," Patterson added. "We also had many season bests and a pool record in the 100 breaststroke. We will need to be on point when we compete next week. We will learn from these performances and get better from them."
The Ball State women's swimming and diving team will return to action next weekend, Saturday, Nov. 19, at Grand Valley State beginning at 1 p.m.
