LIST OF CANDIDATES | MATTINGLY'S NOMINATION INFO
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State captain Leah Mattingly has been selected as one of 30 candidates nationwide for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award in the sport of women's soccer.
The award is presented annually to a senior who demonstrates notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. Candidates were selected from nominations across the country.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Mattingly, a defender from Floyds Knobs, Indiana, has been a model student-athlete at Ball State. An interior design major with a 3.902 GPA, she has been named to the Dean's List in every one of her college semesters. Mattingly was selected to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team and earned a spot on the MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete list in each of the past two seasons.
On the field, Mattingly was an All-MAC First Team selection last year after earning second-team honors in 2015 and all-freshman team recognition in 2014. She has started every game since her arrival on campus and enters this weekend's action 40 minutes shy of breaking the Ball State record for minutes played in a career.
Now in her second season as a team captain, Mattingly is described by Ball State coach Craig Roberts as someone who "inspires and motivates those around her to play at a higher level."
She helps to anchor a back line that has posted 34 shutouts during her career and has ranked among the national leaders in goals against average. She has also recorded 11 goals and 10 assists to rank seventh in school history with 32 career points.
Away from the field, Mattingly is the leader of a team Bible study. She also uses her stature as a college soccer player to help grow the game, serving as an instructor at various camps and working with the Delaware County Futbol Club (DCFC) youth program.
Mattingly has been active in the Muncie community since her arrival at Ball State. She has volunteered for the Second Harvest Food Bank and the Secret Families charity in addition to serving as a tutor for the Motivate our Minds program. She is also an active member of Athletes in Action and the Interior Design Association.
The field of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award will be narrowed to 10 in the coming weeks, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select this year's award recipient. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the College Cup in December.
Mattingly was the only player from the MAC to make the list. Her selection marks the second year in a row Ball State has had a candidate for the award. Madison Oyer was one of the 30 initial candidates last season.
