Cardinals place two on Academic All-District First Team for first time ever
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State's Alyssa Heintschel and Leah Mattingly were named to the Academic All-District 5 First Team for women's soccer, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
This is the first time Ball State has had two first-team selections for Academic All-District. Both players will now be on the ballot for the Academic All-America team to be released Nov. 22.
One a goalkeeper and the other a left back, the duo leads a defensive unit that has helped the Cardinals win back-to-back Mid-American Conference regular season championships.
Heintschel, a junior keeper from Oregon, Ohio, is an Academic All-District choice for the second year in a row after earning second-team honors last season. A chemistry major with a 4.0 GPA, she is a three-time MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week and earned MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete honors last season.
On the field, Heintschel owns a 10-2-2 record, a 0.82 goals against average and seven shutouts this season. She still has another year to play, but her career 0.78 GAA to this point ranks as the best in school history. Her 29 career wins are five shy of the school record.
Mattingly, a senior defender from Floyds Knobs, Indiana, carries a 3.9 GPA as an interior design major. She is a two-time MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete choice and one of 30 candidates nationwide for this year's Senior CLASS Award.
A two-time All-MAC selection, Mattingly owns the Ball State career records for games started (81) and minutes played (7,568). She has started every game of her college career, and her play on the back line has helped Ball State lead the MAC and rank among the top 20 nationally in goals against average in each of the past two seasons. She also owns 11 goals and 10 assists for her career.
Ball State locked up its second straight MAC regular season championship Thursday with a 2-0 win over Miami. The Cardinals will host Northern Illinois at 1 p.m. Sunday in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament. The game will air on ESPN3, produced by Ball State Sports Link.
