Both Swimming and Diving Teams Place Second in the Indiana Intercollegiate Meet

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Ball State men's and women's swimming and diving teams kicked off the 2016-17 season competing the Indiana Intercollegiate Meet Saturday afternoon with second place finishes.
The women got the Cardinals off to a great start in the 200 yard medley relay. Anne Vormohr, Amanda Kedzierski, Sophie Bader and Jessica Extine led Ball State to a second place finish in the event with a time of 1:46.11.
Freshman Rachel Bertram placed second in one-meter diving with a final score of 244.65 and placed third in three-meter diving with a final score of 258.00.
Senior Jessica Extine finished the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.31, placing fourth. Freshman Anne Vormohr was right behind Extine, finishing fifth with a time of 24.41.
Freshman Sophie Bader, senior Courtney Mudd, junior Traci Muszalski, senior Kimberly Scott and sophomore Liz Madison all had a strong showing in the 200 yard IM, finishing fourth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth respectively.
Four Cardinals placed in the top ten in the 100 yard butterfly. Bader finished second with a time of 57.84. Sophomore Maryn Meldrum touched right before senior Katie Horn, taking third and fourth place. Junior Andrea Ritcher wasn't far behind, finishing fifth with a time of 58.95.
Coach Kristy Patterson was encouraged by what she saw at the meet today.
"This is always a fun meet to start our season off with," Patterson said. "We are racing well and showing signs of progress, but we are still working on some habits and race tactics. Our dive squad is coming together well. They started the season strong today. We are ready to get back to work Monday as we prepare for MAC competition on the road this Friday."
For the men, two Cardinals finished in the top ten in the 50 yard freestyle. Senior Austin Green placed fourth with a time of 21.81. Freshman Ben Andrew finished with a time of 22.31, placing ninth. Green also earned fifth place in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 48.49.
Senior Tanner Barton finished fifth in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 52.83 and senior Jacob Eckert placed 10th in the 100 butterfly with a final time of 54.41.
Freshman Chase Jackson had an eighth place finish in the 100 yard backstroke with a final time of 54.01.
Freshman Cobie Fritsch, freshman Logan Ackley, senior Bradley Ridge and senior JD Middleton earned an eighth place finish in the 200 freestyle relay with a final time of 1:33.22.
Sophomore Lane Sawyer and sophomore Gabe Dean both competed for the Cardinals on the diving board.
The women's swimming and diving team will return to action on Friday, Oct. 28 as they travel to Akron. The men's swimming and diving team will also be in action on Friday, Oct. 28 at home when they take on Albion College.
