
Men's Tennis Defeats EIU 6-1 In Season Opener

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team (1-0) opened its 2016 spring season with a 6-1 win over Eastern Illinois (0-1) Sunday afternoon at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. It marks the third straight season the Cardinals have opened spring play with a victory.
The Cardinals took an early 1-0 edge over the Panthers after taking all three doubles matches from Eastern Illinois. Patrick Downs alongside teammate Matt Helm were the first doubles tandem off the court, after posting a 6-3 win over Trent Reiman and Gran Reiman. On court two, Conner Andersen paired up with Collin Rigney to clinch the doubles point for the Cardinals with their 6-3 defeat over Ryan Henderson and Ognjen Jevtic. At No. 1 doubles, Lucas Andersen and Andrew Stutz also earned a 7-6 victory over Robert Skolik and Rui Silva.
Ball State won five of their six singles matches. Lucas Andersen took down Robert Skolik in straight sets on the top court for his first victory of the season, 6-1, 6-4. Conner Andersen made his Cardinal debut on court four defeating Grant Reiman, 6-2, 7-5. Marko Guzina along with teammate Colin Rigney also earned straight set victories over their opponents on courts five and six respectively.
Nemanja Guzina fought hard on court three after taking the first set 7-5 over Rui Silva. Nemanja would drop the next two sets for Ball State's lone loss of the day.
The Ball State men's tennis team remains at home next weekend when it hosts Wright State at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
