EVANSTON, Ill. - The Ball State women's tennis team opened fall action at the Wildcat Invite hosted by Big Ten foe Northwestern Friday afternoon.
“Today was a very exciting day for our team,” Ball State assistant women's tennis coach Tessa Lyons said. "It was their first time competing this Fall and overall I was very happy with our level. This tournament has very good, ranked teams but up and down the line we were in almost every match. We had three players get their first wins as Ball State Cardinals and going into tomorrow we are looking to get better every match.”
The Cardinals played two singles and two doubles matches for their first day of competition.
In singles round one, Peyton Gollhofer recorded her first collegiate singles victory in straight sets after posting a 6-1, 6-1 win over Pittsburgh's Clara Lucas. Newcomer Julia Sbircea lost the first set 6-2 against Pittsburgh's Natsumi Okamoto but would come back to win the second set 6-4 despite efforts Sbircea would drop the third set to Okamoto.
In round two singles, Blanco and Sbircea clinched two set wins over their respective opponents.
The Cardinals went 1-1 in doubles play after Gollhofer paired up with Blanco for a 6-2 defeat over Eastern Michigan's Renu Sharma and Anna Veleva.
