MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State soccer team scheduled some measuring-stick games this fall to test itself as it prepares for a run in the Mid-American Conference.
One of those tests came last weekend when the Cardinals proved their capability in a 1-1 draw against an unbeaten LSU team.
They'll get another shot this weekend, and they won't even have to leave the state. The Cardinals (3-2-1) will visit Indiana (3-3-1) on Sunday for the first game between the teams in eight years.
The teams have met just twice previously with each side winning one. Ball State took the first meeting 1-0 in 2004, and Indiana evened the series with a 2-0 victory in 2007.
They have played two of the same opponents so far this season with both coming last weekend. Ball State tied LSU and lost to Middle Tennessee, while Indiana lost to LSU and defeated Middle Tennessee. The Hoosiers are coming off a 2-0 loss Friday at No. 13 Notre Dame.
Defense has been a hallmark for Ball State under coach Craig Roberts, and this season has been no different. The Cardinals have limited their opponents to one goal or fewer in every game but one and rank second among MAC teams with a 0.80 goals against average.
The Ball State back line isn't even giving up many chances, limiting opposing teams to an average of 7.7 shots per game. Although the Cardinals found it tougher to score last weekend than they did early in the season, the defensive effort kept them in both contests.
Sunday's matchup with Indiana is the last of two remaining non-conference games on Ball State's schedule. The team will visit Morehead State next weekend before opening the MAC slate Sept. 25 at home against Eastern Michigan.
