Kavanaugh Leads Field Hockey Against Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ball State (0-6) field hockey team took on Ohio State (3-2) Friday afternoon on the road and narrowly fell to the Buckeyes 3-2 despite a pair goals from junior Lexi Kavanaugh (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon Verona Sherrill).
The Cardinals and the Buckeyes remained scoreless through just the first three minutes of the game. Maddy Humphrey opened the scoring, followed by Peanut Johnson's backhanded shot to give Ohio State a two goal lead just 4:30 into the game. Kavanaugh responded quickly in the 8th minute after she tipped in a shot off a rebound of Merinda Morley (University City, Mo./University City) to narrow the score 2-1 prior to halftime.
There was then a scoring drought until the 39th minute, when Johnson secured the game for the Buckeyes with her second goal. Kavanaugh responded with her third goal of the season in the 54th minute off a feed from senior Natalie Jardell (Granville, Ohio/Granville) to the upper right of the cage.
Back in net, junior goalkeeper Jordan Dues (Fallbrook, Calif./Fallbrook) made her sixth start of the season and recorded six saves for a .667 save percentage.
Hammering Dues was the Ohio State offense, which tallied 17 attempted shots with nine on goal, compared to the Cardinals six with five on net. The Buckeyes also benefitted from seven penalty corners to Ball State's two.
Up next, the Ball State field hockey team will welcome Appalachian State to the Briner Sports Complex tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m.
