Soccer Shuts out IPFW, 3-0

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Ball State soccer team spent the majority of Sunday's game in the offensive third, controlling the action in a 3-0 victory at IPFW.
The Cardinals (3-1) racked up 32 shot attempts in the game and limited the Mastodons (0-4) to only five on the way to their second win of the weekend.
“This was the most consistent performance we have had across all areas,” Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. “I am really happy with the way we are creating offensively right now. We still aren't converting at a high rate, and I believe once we do that we could really take off.”
Abigail Boswell scored for the second straight game, while fellow freshman Emily Scott registered her first collegiate goal. But Lauren Hall's free-kick goal in the opening half proved to be the only scoring the Cardinals would need.
Alyssa Heintschel and Bailey Coppedge combined on Ball State's second shutout of the season. Coppedge, a freshman, saw the first action of her career in the second half.
“We played well defensively,” Roberts said. “Lorina (White) and Orla (Travers-Gillespie) were strong at center back, and our outsides did a good job pushing forward.”
Hall's goal was the only scoring in the first half, but Scott quickly put the Cardinals in gear in the second, scoring off a pass from Madison Oyer only 34 seconds after the break.
Boswell added some more insurance 12 minutes later, rebounding a saved shot off the foot of Chelsy Swackhamer and finding the net.
“It was great to see our freshmen get involved in the attack again,” Roberts said. “I'm happy for Emily to score her first goal, and it came when we needed a spark offensively. We were able to get a lot of our younger players some quality time today.”
Ball State will head back on the road next weekend, traveling to Baton Rouge, La., for games Friday against LSU and Sunday against Middle Tennessee.
