MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State soccer team will open its home schedule Friday at the Briner Sports Complex with a 5 p.m. contest against Wright State. As always, admission is free.
For fans wishing to catch the Cardinals in Muncie, this is the only chance until the Mid-American Conference portion of the schedule begins in late September.
Friday's game is the team's lone break in a long stretch of road games during the non-conference slate. The Cardinals will hit the road again immediately to close out the weekend Sunday with a 2:30 p.m. matchup just up I-69 at IPFW.
Ball State (1-1) split two games in its opening weekend with a 4-0 win at Jacksonville State and a 2-0 loss at Lipscomb. The Cardinals were in attack mode throughout the weekend. The difference between the two results was their ability to convert scoring chances.
Four different players scored in the season opener as Ball State took advantage of an 18-3 advantage in shot attempts with goals from Kelcy Fiser, Gabby Veldman, Lorina White and Kelsey Wendlandt. The team registered even more shots at Lipscomb, 21 in fact, but came up dry on the scoreboard.
In Friday's game, Ball State will face a Wright State team (1-1) that also split its opening weekend. The Raiders were on the road for a 2-1 loss at Louisville and a 3-1 win at Morehead State.
Sunday's opponent, IPFW (0-2), also went on the road last weekend, falling 2-1 at Northern Kentucky and 2-0 at Bowling Green. The Mastodons will play this weekend against both of the preseason co-favorites in the MAC West Division. They will host Western Michigan on Friday before Ball State comes to town.
Ball State is 2-0-1 all-time against Wright State, but the teams have not met since a BSU win in 2005. The Cardinals are 9-1-1 all-time against IPFW and defeated the Mastodons 3-0 in Muncie last year. Current Ball State players Veldman and Madison Oyer scored in that game.
