MUNCIE, Ind. -- Delaware Country Club head professional Tom Harris will spend a marathon day on the course next week, and the golf programs at his alma mater will be better off because of it.
The former Ball State golfer will join teaching pros from around the state Aug. 3 for 72 holes of golf at Broadmoor Country Club in Indianapolis. It's all for the Indiana Golf Foundation Charities Day.
Each pro is seeking online donations through the Charities Day page at indianagolf.org. For the second year in a row, Harris will be swinging his clubs for the Cardinal Varsity Club and designating the funds for the Ball State men's and women's golf programs.
"I have been able to stay connected to the Ball State programs because we have the teams playing at our club one or two days a week,” Harris said. "I enjoy finding ways to help both the men's and women's golf programs, and this seemed like a good way to do that."
Thirty percent of the money raised by each pro will support his or her charity of choice. The rest of the funds will benefit the Indiana Golf Foundation and The First Tee of Indiana. Donations will be accepted online through Aug. 2.
Harris played for longtime Ball State coach Earl Yestingsmeier in the 1970s before graduating and beginning his career in the golf industry. He has been the head professional at Delaware Country Club since 1989 and was the 2006 Indiana PGA Professional of the Year.
“We are humbled and thankful Tom Harris is choosing to support our golf programs through his participation in Charities Day,” Ball State women's golf coach Katherine Mowat said. “Tom is committed to supporting the game of golf at all levels, and we are so appreciative of his continued support of our men's and women's golf teams.”
“Tom Harris is a wonderful ambassador for Ball State Golf,” men's coach Mike Fleck said. “He is a highly respected teacher and PGA professional who has been generous with his time and support of our golf program and Delaware Country Club. Tom's effort through Indiana Golf Charities Day is another example of how special our golf family is and how important alumni are to our program.”
