Field Hockey Adds Five Newcomers For Fall 2015

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey program has signed five new student-athletes to the fall 2015 class, including Beth Barnes (Fredericksburg, Va./Mountain View), Hannah Bohn (Louisville, Ky./Assumption), Darbi Gullett (Prospect, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy), Catherine Naas (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn), and Michelle Shampton (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) according to head coach Sally Northcroft. All players will join the Cardinals for the fall 2015 season.
“I am extremely excited about our incoming class. These players will be able to contribute to the team with an undeniable work ethic and strong commitment to driving this team towards success,” Northcroft said. “There is a positivity associated with each of our incoming players that will make an impact right away.”
Barnes completed her senior season at Mountain View High School with a 3.9 GPA, two goals and seven defensive saves. After having earned All-Conference Honorable Mention in 2012, Barnes was named to First Team All-Conference in 2013 and 2014 in the Region 5A, Conference 15 area. Barnes and the 2013 Mountain View field hockey team were the first State Champions in school history, four-time district and conference champions and the 2013 and 2014 regional champions. The four-time letter winner scored one goal and tallied three defensive saves in her senior season. Barnes earned various honors throughout her time with Mountain View, including First Team All-Region in 2013-14, First Team All-State in 2013-14, and All-Area Team honors in 2012-14 in addition to serving as team captain in 2014. Barnes older sister Bryce Barnes also plays for the Ball State field hockey program.
Bohn, a graduate of Assumption High School with a 3.8 GPA, enters Ball State with an exercise science major. Earning two letters under head coach Debbie Judd, Bohn and the Assumption High team finished as two-time defending Kentucky State Champions, with Bohn serving as team captain her junior year. Bohn was selected for the Kentucky All-Star game, as well as being named to two All-Tournament Teams and the Kentucky Select Second Team. After earning the Most Improved Player award her sophomore and junior year, Bohn tallied two goals and two assists as a defensive player in her senior season.
Gullett completed her senior year at Sacred Heart Academy with 37 goals, 32 assists, and a 44-7-4 career record. This past year, Gullett earned All-Catholic First Team and All-State Second Team honors, in addition to being named Academic All-State and to the All-Star Team for the second consecutive year. Gullett and the Sacred Heart field hockey program finished as district champions in 2013 and 2014, in addition to finishing as the state runner-up in 2013. Gullett also boasts a 3.72 GPA rounding out her senior year.
Naas, a transfer from Hofstra University of Hempstead, N.Y., enters Ball State with a 3.529 GPA and a major in health and physical education. Prior to redshirting the 2014-15 year at Hofstra, Naas participated in the USA Field Hockey Futures of Region 6 in 2014, Quik Stix Elite Field Hockey Club from 2013-14, and the New Heights Field Hockey Club from 2012-2014, in addition to her playing experience at Millburn High School. A multi-sport athlete, Naas also played lacrosse and ran track in her time at Millburn.
Shampton completed her field hockey career at Oakwood with 44 goals and 17 assists as well as a start in all 16 games of her senior season. Shampton was named to First Team All-Conference the last three consecutive years, earned two All-State First Team awards during her junior and senior seasons, in addition to being named team MVP the last two years. The midfielder and the Oakwood field hockey team finished the 2014 season with a 10-6 record, while Shampton posted 28 goals. Holding a 3.5 GPA, Shampton has earned various academic awards, including Scholar-Athlete Achievement, Honor Roll, and High Honor Roll from Oakwood High School.
“As a coaching staff, we are looking forward to seeing these players grow, develop and contribute to the Ball State Field Hockey family,” Northcroft added. “Each player brings a unique set of skills and a special characteristic that will blend in well with our current players. We are looking forward as a whole, to welcoming our new Cardinals to the nest!”
The 2015 Ball State field hockey team will open their season when they travel to Piscataway, N.J. on Saturday, Aug. 29 to take on Rutgers at 12 p.m.
