Soccer Wraps up Unbeaten Spring Season
April 18, 2015 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State soccer team closed out an undefeated spring schedule Saturday afternoon with a 5-1 win over Olivet Nazarene and a 2-1 win in the annual alumni game at the Briner Sports Complex.
Chelsy Swackhamer scored two goals, while Gabby Veldman scored once and handed out three assists in the day's opening victory. Leah Mattingly and Kelsey Wendlandt also scored goals as Ball State defeated an Olivet Nazarene team that went undefeated in its conference last fall and advanced to the NAIA national tournament.
“I was very pleased with our passing and movement off the ball,” Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. “We have really been working on that, and this was best combination play we've seen all spring. It was also nice to see scoring from a variety of areas. This was a good result for us against an experienced team.”
Mattingly scored again in the alumni game, while Lauren Hall sent one in from deep to account for the Cardinals' other goal. Nicole Pembleton, who wrapped up her playing career last fall, scored the goal for the alumni team.
Both teams had some fun in the alumni game with the Cardinals even swapping positions between goalkeeper Alyssa Heintschel and forward Aly Kohanowski at one point.
“It was a great change for us to interact with players from years past,” Roberts said. “It was a nice way to end a successful spring season. We made some major progress in a lot of areas this spring, and we will hope to carry that over to our fall season.”
Ball State wrapped up the spring with a 7-0-2 record. It marked the third straight spring with an unbeaten record for the Cardinals.
