Soccer Plays Haiti to 1-1 Draw
April 12, 2015 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Ball State soccer team played the Haiti Women's National Team to a 1-1 draw Sunday in the third annual meeting between the teams.
The contest was a continuation of the Cardinals' spring slate of games at the Briner Sports Complex.
It was a scoreless affair through 76 minutes before Chelsy Swackhamer struck for Ball State. She took a pass from Jenna Finke and threaded into the top left corner of the net.
It looked as though the lead might hold, but Haiti broke through in the 87th minute on a free kick. Jennifer Limage's blast from 35 yards out hit the crossbar, but Rilka Noel was there for the rebound to even the score.
“We were a bit disappointed about giving up that free kick and conceding a goal on that, but overall we saw some good things,” Ball State coach Craig Roberts said. “It's great to see how both teams have progressed, and I'm delighted with how some of the younger players on our team have come through.”
Goalkeeper Alyssa Heintschel made four saves for the Cardinals, while Haiti keepers Ednie Limage and Tajah Daliemand combined for seven saves. Both teams registered 14 shots on the day.
Haiti is the No. 63-ranked women's national team in the world and No. 6 in the CONCACAF region. Roberts also serves as an assistant for the Haiti team.
“We look forward to every game,” Roberts said. “Obviously I have different interest in this one, coaching with Haiti as well. But it's just nice to see how both programs continue to improve.”
This is the third spring in a row the teams have played in Muncie, and the Cardinals now own a 2-0-1 record in those meetings.
Ball State will close out its spring schedule Saturday, hosting Olivet Nazarene at 1 p.m., followed by an alumni game at 3:30 p.m. The Cardinals are unbeaten at 5-0-2 this spring.
