MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team improved its record to 12-9 overall and 2-1 in Mid-American Conference play with a 5-2 win over league rival Western Michigan Saturday afternoon at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 17-6 on the year and 2-2 in MAC action.
"This was a great team effort and a great win,” Ball State men's tennis coach Bill Richards said. “Western Michigan has had a very good year. They were 17-5 coming in to this match. We had solid doubles and strong play at the top of the lineup carried us again today. What a great senior day for Ray Leonard and Pat Elliott. They both won big matches in singles and doubles. I am so happy to see them go out winners in their last home match."
The Cardinals No. 1 twosome of Patrick Elliott and Lucas Andersen started Ball State off with a 6-3 win over WMU's Stephen Payne and Ruben Greiner. Ray Leonard, alongside teammate Colin Rigney, clinched the doubles point for the Cardinals after defeating the Broncos' Jefta Kecic and Jimmy Beckwith, 6-4.
In singles action, Ball State earned wins on courts one, two, three and six. Both Elliott and Andersen took their opponents down in straight sets. Elliott beat Greiner, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 3 singles position while teammate Andersen earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kecic on court two.
Following those matches, Western Michigan earned wins at the No. 4 and No. 5 slots, which made it a 3-2 tally in favor of the Cardinals. On the top court, Leonard took down Maik Steiner in a three set thriller which claimed the winning point for the Cardinals. Patrick Downs was the last match to finish which resulted in a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (5) victory over Pablo Mora.
The Ball State men's tennis team will wrap up its Mid-American Conference regular season on the road at Buffalo (April 17) and Binghamton (April 19).
