Ohio State Withstands Men's Volleyball Attack

COLUMBUS, Ohio - - The Ball State Men's Volleyball team (12-15, 5-10 MIVA) fell in a 3-0 (17-25, 18-25, 28-30) final to No. 11 Ohio State (20-6, 10-3 MIVA) on Thursday evening. The match marked the sixth Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association loss in a row for the Cardinals.
Ball State came out strong in the third set, battling for extra points and marked a match-best attack percentage of .267, while the Buckeyes marked .317. Ohio State ultimately shut it down to cinch the final game 30-28 despite the 10 lead changes and 27 tied scores throughout the three set-match.
The offensive spotlight was held by sophomore Brendan Surane when he posted 11 of the Cardinals 31 overall kills, while he also tallied both of the two Ball State aces. Surane also posted two block assists, paired with two digs on the night.
Defensively, senior libero David Ryan Vander Meer notched 11 digs and three assists, while freshman Matt Walsh tallied three block assists.
Walsh also rounded out his stats with a total of five kills. Other Ball State standouts included senior Shane Witmer who received an error-free 20 shots, held six kills, tallied two block assists, and eight digs, all the while racking up 7.0 points.
The majority of the Cardinals' stats fell to the Buckeyes throughout the three-set match. Ohio State held the advantage in blocks (10.0-6.0), digs (34-32), aces (6-2), kills (43-31), and attack percentage (.333-.112) to the Buckeyes. Ball State suffered from 10 service errors and 21 attack errors compared to Ohio State's 15 service errors paired with 12 attack errors.
The Ball State men's volleyball team will round out regular season action when they take on McKendree on Saturday, Apr. 11 at 7 p.m. central time.
