Men?s Volleyball Drops Five Set Match To Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. - - The No. 14 Ball State (12-11, 5-6 MIVA) men's volleyball team fell in a marathon of a loss Saturday night in a 3-2 (27-29, 18-25, 37-35, 30-28, 9-15) final to Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association opponent Quincy (11-9, 4-7 MIVA). The five-set heartbreaker marked the second conference loss in a row for the Cardinals, in the midst of a seven-match conference lineup.
Ball State came out strong, battling for extra points in the three of five sets despite dropping to a two game deficit early in the evening. Quincy then turned it around to close out the final game with only a total of two attacking errors and posted a fifth set attack percentage of .467 to the Cardinals .071.
All games were back-and-forth, pressing through 23 lead changes, while the teams also fought through 62 tie scores in the five sets.
The Cardinals standout was sophomore Edgardo Cartagena when he posted a team-high of 15 kills, seven digs, and one solo block. Cartagena also lined up for 21 serves, more than any other from Ball State, marking a .762 percentage overall.
Strong defensive lines included, freshman Mitch Weiler who notched 18 digs and two assists, while sophomore Brendan Surane tallied four solo blocks, paired with three block assists. Sophomore Connor Gross marked four total blocks in the process of gaining 60 assists on 133 attempts over the course of the night.
Surane also rounded out his stats with a stellar 13 kills for a .579 attack percentage, of which marks a new personal season high in kills. Other kill leaders of the night included freshman Matt Walsh who tallied 10 and one of three Ball State aces, along with Nate Wolf who downed 11 kills and another ace.
The Cardinals' stats were overall very similar to the Hawks throughout the five-set match. Ball State held the advantage in blocks (16.0-12.0) and assists (62-59), despite falling in aces (6-3) and attack percentage (.208-.203) to Quincy. The teams were all squared up with 65 kills and 51 digs each, although Ball State suffered from 25 service errors and 33 attack errors compared to Quincy's 20 service errors paired with 32 attack errors.
The Hawks' Jack Gamache racked up 15 kills and 14 digs along with three of the team's six aces, while Jarrod Kelso posted 14 kills and five total blocks on the night.
The Ball State men's volleyball team will continue road action when they travel to Romeoville, Ill. to take on MIVA foe Lewis Thursday night at 7 p.m. central time.
